The Bach Winchester Voices and Orchestra return to Stockbridge with a joyful Christmas programme – and four outstanding soloists ready to shine their light on J. S. Bach’s brilliant music. Cantata BWV 36, Soar joyfully upwards, is a jubilant invitation to sing praises to the heavens with human and instrumental voices – as we will! Cantata BVW 62, Now come, saviour of the heathens, sets words by Martin Luther that eagerly anticipate the birth of Christ. Wise men then travel to Bethlehem in Cantata BWV 65, They will all come from Sheba, with precious offerings for the new-born child – only to be taught that no gift suffices but one’s heart. Motet BWV 118, Jesus Christ, light of my life, reaffirms the Lutheran confidence in the refuge and comfort that Christ will eventually bring. These bright musical jewels are set in the crown of Brandenburg Concerto I, written for a Prussian prince and performed to perfection by our professional period band.
